About Opticomm
OptiComm is a telecommunications carrier that specialises in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of Fibre-to-the-Premises networks for new residential and business developments.
Formed in 2005 as a division of Optimal Cable Services our aim was to address the under serviced need for Fibre to the Premises in Australia. While FTTP had been commercially available in Australia since 2001, the majority of the projects were located in Western Australia. With only a handful in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria most were suffering from poor operational and performance issues.
A team of experienced industry people came together to develop the OptiComm business model around an “Open Access, Wholesale only" philosophy. We were determined that mistakes made in the past by other operators were not repeated and this resulted in some quick wins the first being the Land Management Corporation’s Lochiel Park Estate in South Australia.
However, one of the impediments to success - particularly with major developers like Landcom, Mirvac and LendLease - was the lack of financial backing from a large and well known organisation. Land development projects can take many years to achieve completion and developers frequently questioned – who is OptiComm and how long will they be around?
In mid 2007, a mature and well known Australian company – Hills Holdings Limited - was seeking to expand into new business opportunities, leveraging their technology and home automation, security and lighting control systems through a new channel to market. Their investment in OptiComm was, as they say, “a marriage made in heaven”; providing OptiComm the financial muscle and organisational support which was lacking in the other FTTP operators.
Since then Opticomm has gone from strength to strength and is now the single largest provider of FTTP in Australia. With more than 58 projects under development and contracted to deliver services to over 150,000 lots in residential and business precincts, we are the leading operator of FTTP technologies in the country. Its also one of the reasons we were selected by NBNco to roll out the initial stages of the National Broadband Network in Tasmania; a task we achieved on time and under budget.
